What is RIRS ?

Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS)
RIRS is performed to remove stones without making any incisions on the kidney while using a laser and a viewing tube called a fiberoptic endoscope that goes through the urethra into the kidney. It is performed under general, local or spinal anesthesia. This procedure requires a specialized urologist who is specifically trained in RIRS.

What is URS ?

Ureteroscopy (URS) is a preferred method for the treatment of small- to medium-sized kidney stones located in any part of the urinary tract.

The procedure

The procedure is typically performed with the patient under general anaesthesia (asleep). During this procedure, a ureteroscope is inserted through the urethra and bladder into the ureter (a tube that carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder) or kidney.

WHAT IS EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCKWAVE LITHOTRIPSY (ESWL) ?

ESWL is the non surgical treatment of urinary tract stones. The stone is fragmented with sound waves into the smallest size possible and are passed out through the normal urinary tract. It uses high-energy shock waves to break down the kidney stones into small crystals. After the procedure, the kidney stones should be small enough to pass out of your body in your urine.
